Cortez Fishing Charters: Old Florida Charm Minutes from Anna Maria Island

If you’ve been searching for Cortez fishing charters, here’s the short version: you don’t have to launch from the village itself to fish its water well. Our marina is a few minutes up the road in Holmes Beach, and we’re working the same passes, flats, and bay that Cortez has fished for generations before your trip’s even an hour old.

A Village Worth the Short Drive

From the Cortez fishing village, plan on a 5- to 10-minute drive to our marina at 6398 Marina Way in Holmes Beach — about 3 miles up the road. That’s about as close as any of our service-area towns get, which means more time on the water and less of it in the truck, and it means your captain is splitting time between Cortez, Longboat Pass, and the Anna Maria Island backwaters on a regular basis instead of visiting once a season. Cortez itself earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1995, when its historic district was formally recognized — part of why the waterfront still carries a working-harbor feel that a lot of the Gulf Coast has traded in for condos.

What’s Biting Around Cortez

Fishing near Cortez means Longboat Pass, the Cortez flats, and the stretch of Sarasota Bay where it meets the Intracoastal Waterway — three kinds of structure inside a few minutes of each other. It’s light-tackle, skinny-water fishing: snook and redfish holding tight to docks and mangrove shorelines, spotted seatrout scattered over the grass flats, and mangrove snapper stacked around bridge pilings. On a high, moving tide we’ll work jigs and live bait tight against the mangrove roots for snook and redfish; when the tide slows, the grass flats and sandbars hold the trout and flounder instead. Run the fall tide right and Spanish mackerel push through the pass chasing bait, keeping rods bent the whole drift.

Healthy Grass Flats Keep This Water Producing

Part of why this water keeps producing is what’s growing under it. NOAA Fisheries designates seagrass as essential fish habitat because animal life in a healthy seagrass bed runs 10 to 100 times denser than over open sand nearby — and redfish and flounder, both regulars around Cortez, use those grass beds as nursery habitat before they’re big enough to chase. Fish the grass along that stretch of the Intracoastal and you’re working water that’s been raising fish for this fishery long before your trip.

What’s Included on a Trip

We run 4, 6, and 8-hour inshore trips out of Holmes Beach, and every one includes bait, tackle, your fishing license, and bottled water — nothing to track down ahead of time. Your captain fillets and bags any legal fish you keep, and a few of our Cortez-area clients bring the catch straight to a local “cook your catch” restaurant and turn the trip into dinner. Florida requires a fishing license to keep saltwater species anywhere in the state, and it’s already covered on every trip we run.
